Modern Eye was founded by Dr. Elizabeth Eckhart, on a belief that patients and employees are the most important part of medical care. All too often eye exams can feel overwhelming, rushed through, and full of high-pressure sales at retail offices. Modern Eye is proud to be independently owned, so we can prioritize you, not corporate profits. Our staff takes the time to thoroughly explain all of our tests, to answer any of your questions and we genuinely enjoy helping you choose the eyewear to best suit your taste and lifestyle. About Us

Dr. Eckhart founded Modern Eye in 2023 to place the focus back on the patient. Small businesses are the fabric of the Dayton community, drawing residents and other community members together for a common goal. Modern Eye is proud to be one of the pioneers bringing business back to a city hit hard by economic recession. As a resident of Dayton for the past 10 years, Dr. Eckhart has seen the growth and revitalization of the downtown.

Our Team

Elizabeth Eckhart, OD

Dr. Elizabeth Eckhart grew up in the Miami Valley and graduated valedictorian of Clinton-Massie High school. She then attended The Ohio State University, graduating with Honors in Biology and minoring in business. Dr. Eckhart went on to attend optometry school in Boston, MA at The New England College of Optometry. She completed clinical rotations at the Dimock Community Health Center in Boston, the Portland VA Hospital and studied abroad at the Wenzhou Eye Hospital in Wenzhou, China.

Dr. Eckhart specializes in Glaucoma, Macular degeneration, Diabetes, Foreign object removal, Dry eye treatment, Retinal diseases, and Cataracts

Crystal – Optician

Crystal is an experienced optician at Modern Eye in Dayton, Ohio, with a passion for helping people find their perfect pair of glasses. She believes that eyes are fascinating and loves seeing the joy on a person’s face when they discover frames that truly suit them.

As a dedicated mother of three and a proud cat mom to two kitties, Crystal enjoys spending her free time outdoors. Whether she’s taking a walk, swimming, or simply enjoying quality time with her family, she values every moment. Her warm and friendly approach makes every eyewear selection experience enjoyable and personal.

In a world where every eye doctor stocks the same products from the same monopoly it's rare to find a place both covered by insurance and with affordable frames from independently owned brands. The store was was fairly small but thoughtfully curated with a wide variety of different styles. The service and exam themselves was great. The doctor was nice and gave me a more thorough exam than I am used too. I don't remember ever having my depth perception assessed by prior doctors. Our Rich History

In 1913 the Great Flood of Dayton left the downtown under 13 feet of water and many of the wooden buildings that comprised the downtown were destroyed by electrical fires. Our building, located in the Fireblocks District, was built in 1918 of solid concrete to guard against fire and floods after the disaster. Our office design highlights many of these beautiful and historical architectural details that helped keep these structures standing for over 100 years.
